UPCOMING EVENTS:

Latin American Nights

Presented by Sydney Symphony

Opera House

15 - 19 May 2008

"Piazzolla’s concerto for bandoneón showcases the many moods of Tango, ranging from anger to joy..."

Argentine poet Jorge Luis Borges says the tango was inspired by the ‘streets and dusks’ of Buenos Aires, the sultry dance of the bordellos and slums. Ástor Piazzolla tamed the tango but preserved its violent passions in his concert works. Piazzolla’s concerto for bandoneón (a kind of accordion) showcases the many moods of that most seductive of dances, ranging from anger to joy. Acclaimed bandeonista Carel Kraayenhof will perform with his signature intensity. Piazzolla’s teacher Ginastera also captured the musical soul of his country. In the case of his ballet Estancia, it was the music of the Argentine cowboy, with evocations of the grasslands, strumming guitars and rancher machismo. Revueltas’ dazzling La Noche de los Mayas (The Night of the Mayas) brings to vivid life the rituals of ancient Mexico, a celebration of archaic energy and tropical colour. Young maverick Kristjan Järvi conducts with his trademark dynamism.

“Escape to NOSTALGIA Tango Bar”

The roots of Tango stem from beautiful Buenos Aires, the place where Tango culture evolved in its many bars. They became places of escape, where people could forget their troubles and immerse themselves in Tango music and dance. The essence of these old days is captured in NOSTALGIA Tango Bar - A place where people from all walks of life can experience a little piece of Buenos Aires.

When you listen or dance to Tango music, you’ll notice its highly emotive nature. It is this longing for the past, the recreation of special moments that NOSTALGIA Tango Bar aims to bring to its guests.

“Tango is a dance of passion and self expression. The concept of NOSTALGIA was created to provide an opportunity for people to enjoy Tango culture in a beautiful bar like atmosphere, just like in Buenos Aires.”   – Franzesca Mimi.
